The county seat of Broward County, Fort Lauderdale is a cosmopolitan coastal city with a total area that covers roughly 36.3 square miles. Officially established in 1911, the origins of Fort Lauderdale dates as far back as two millennia. Its extensive history includes the settlement of Tequesta Indians to the construction of the so-called New River Settlement.

Today, Fort Lauderdale’s extensive network of canals has earned it its nickname: Venice of America. In addition to over 160 miles of these waterways, Fort Lauderdale is also a thriving city with a diverse economy. Its sunny climate, beaches, and entertainment options has also made it a favorite destination among holidaymakers.

Fort Lauderdale has a year-round population of almost 181,000 according to 2017 estimates. It is one of the Miami metropolitan area’s principal cities, along with Davie, located about 20 minutes away from the city. Miami is south of Fort Lauderdale, approximately 30 to 40 minutes away depending on traffic.
